Mao Zedong was a communist leader in China and instituted the
People's Republic of China. He was accountable for the ruinous policies of the
‘Cultural Revolution’ and the 'Great Leap Forward.’
Mao Zedong was born on December 26th, 1893 into a poverty-stricken peasant family in Shaoshan (Hunan province), central China. As a young man, he traveled to many major Chinese cities learning how to become a teacher and familiarized himself upon Marxist literature. Mao Zedong also founded the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) After the KMT and the CCP allied together against Japan, a civil war broke out between the anti-communists (KMT) and the CCP. The Communists were triumphant, and on October 1st, 1949, Mao declared the establishment of the ‘People's Republic of China’ (PRC). Mao and other Communist authorities started to restructure Chinese society and government. The nation’s industry was put under state possession, and China's agricultural occupations began to be systematized into collectives. Any resistance was vigorously punished. The Chinese originally acquired imperative assistance from the Soviet Union, but interactions soon started to freeze. In 1958, Mao tried to acquaint people with a more 'Chinese' translation of communism, so he initiated the 'Great Leap Forward'. This urged the mass recruitment of labor to advance industrial and agricultural production. The result was actually a colossal decrease in agricultural productivity, which, together with depleted harvests, led to starvation and millions of casualties. The policy was revoked, and Mao's leadership diminished. Becoming desperate to strengthen his authority, Mao instigated the 'Cultural Revolution' of 1966, wishing to eliminate the country’s 'impure' aspects and recuperate the innovative spirit. This resulted in 1.5 million people dead and much of the country's cultural tradition annihilated. In September 1967, with multiple cities on the cusp of rebellion, Mao ordered in the army to reinstate “peace.” Mao Zedong directed communist armies in China starting with a long revolution beginning in 1927 and then governed the nation’s communist administration from its establishment in 1949. Along with Joseph Stalin and Vladimir Lenin, Mao is thought of as one of the most vital communist authorities of the Cold War. |
